BECOMING EIGHTY

SEEING MOTHER

Here she is, my mama, Anna Helfgott, with her band of "girlfriends" attending a fair, either in Los Angeles or New York. They were somewhere in their twenties, working girls out for a vacation. My mother worked for a dressmaking company in New York and in Baltimore. These young women may have been her workmates or maybe she met them when she went out dancing.. This photo appears to be post-flapper, maybe even early thirties. She met my father in 1927 (I think) but they didn't get married until they were thirty-five, in 1935. They were the same age and celebrated their birthdays together, albeit neither believed in or practiced celebrations to any effect.
